DOES INTERMITTENT FASTING WORK?
You may have heard about people fasting or the term intermittent fasting, but what exactly is this all about?
Intermittent Fasting (let’s just call it “IF”) is basically going a specific amount of time without eating. Not too complicated. But what’s the objective?
The concept of IF is to accomplish a few things. One, “IF” gives your body a rest from metabolizing food and in the process, enables your body to burn fat for energy due to the fact that there is no other source of energy to draw from…for a determined period of time. Two, “IF” also enables your body to naturally detox and cleanse itself. This process often leaves people with a lesser appetite and more energy.
The easiest way to do “IF” is to eat nothing for 12 hours on a periodic basis during the week. For example, you eat your last meal by 8pm and then eat nothing again until 8am when you wake up. Pretty simple.
There a few approaches to IF. Let’s take a look.
Overnight fasting: This is the type of IF I just mentioned, where you stop eating for a specific amount of time, usually overnight. 12 hours is a starting point, but some people will do it for 14-16 hours to get the most benefit. For most people, this is the easiest approach.
5:2 method:. For five days, you eat totally normally within a balanced approach. Then, on the following two days, you only eat 500 calories per day. This gives your body a break to detoxify itself and burn a bit of fat for energy in the process. This tends to be an effective way to lose weight gradually if you maintain a healthy normal diet on the other non-fasting days.
24-hour fasts: This one is more challenging, but people often exclaim that it makes them feel great, with increased energy and a feeling of well-being.
Meal skipping: One way to experiment in the beginning is to just skip a routine meal. It’s a start before you embark on a more formal fasting period.
Are you ready? Hopefully so. Intermittent fasting can be a game changer towards improving your health while enabling you to increasingly burn fat from week to week. Over time, with a balanced diet routine, you should gradually get leaner.
