Hypothyroidism (Low Thyroid) is characterized by low thyroid hormone production. Thyroid hormones directly affect growth, development, and various metabolic processes in the body.
When Thyroid hormone levels are low, this condition can have multiple consequences that affect your health. Correcting Hypothyroidism with Hormone Therapy is the solution.
What are thyroid hormones?
Thyroid hormones stimulate cell metabolism and are produced by the thyroid gland. This gland functions by removing iodine from the blood and utilizing it to produce thyroid hormone.
T4 and T3 are the two most important thyroid hormones. T4 represents 99.9% of the thyroid hormone in your body, while T3 represents 0.1%. T3 has the most biological activity with the body as the “more active” hormone. T4 is converted to T3 upon release by the thyroid hormone.
Thyroid hormone regulation
The Thyroid is regulated by the Pituitary gland, which is located in the brain. The Pituitary is also regulated to some degree by thyroid hormone which is circulating in the blood and also the hypothalamus, which is also located in the brain. This process is referred to as “feedback effect”.
The hypothalamus releases a hormone called “TRH” which signals the pituitary to release thyroid stimulating hormone, “TSH”. TSH signals the thyroid to release thyroid hormones. If overactivity or underactivity of these three glands occurs, this may result in conditions known as Hyperthyroidism (High Thyroid) or Hypothyroidism (Low Thyroid).
The symptoms of Hypothyroidism can be subtle. They often include depression, fatigue and elevated cholesterol levels. This can be determined and diagnosed using a blood test.
Hypothyroidism, on average, requires life-long medication therapy.
